Yamaha is evaluating opportunities in the premium motorcycle segment as it considers a stronger return to larger bikes.
Yamaha could expand its presence in India’s premium motorcycle market. Yamaha Motor India Chairman Hajime Aota recently indicated to ET Auto that the company is evaluating opportunities in the segment.
The company has a limited presence in higher-displacement motorcycles in India. Its earlier big-bike range included models such as the YZF-R1, which later disappeared from the market.
If Yamaha expands its premium range, several global models could suit Indian riders. Here are five motorcycles that stand out from its international portfolio.
Yamaha R7
The Yamaha R7 is a sportbike focused on both road use and performance riding. It uses Yamaha’s 689cc CP2 parallel-twin engine. The motorcycle gets a lightweight chassis, adjustable suspension and sharp handling. It also features R-series styling and rider aids such as ride-by-wire, riding modes and a quickshifter.
Yamaha Tenere 700
The Tenere 700 is an adventure motorcycle designed for both road and off-road use. It uses a 689cc CP2 parallel-twin engine producing around 73 hp and 68 Nm.

The motorcycle gets a 21-inch front wheel and an 18-inch rear wheel. It also has long-travel suspension and more than 240 mm of ground clearance.
The bike features a 6.3-inch vertical TFT display with smartphone connectivity. It also gets a USB-C charging port and Yamaha’s rally-inspired design.
Yamaha MT-09
The MT-09 is a naked motorcycle powered by Yamaha’s 890cc CP3 three-cylinder engine. The engine is known for strong mid-range performance and a broad power delivery.
It also gets a lightweight chassis and an electronics package. The package includes IMU-based rider aids, riding modes and a quickshifter. The upright riding position adds everyday practicality. This combination gives the MT-09 a balance of performance and daily usability.
Yamaha Lander 250
The Lander 250 is a lightweight dual-sport motorcycle. It uses a 249cc single-cylinder engine producing around 21 PS and 20.5 Nm. The motorcycle gets a 21-inch front wheel and an 18-inch rear wheel. It also offers long-travel suspension and 240 mm of ground clearance.
The Lander 250 has an upright riding position and relatively low weight. It also features LED lighting, dual-channel ABS and a digital instrument cluster.
Yamaha XSR900
The XSR900 combines retro-inspired styling with Yamaha’s CP3 platform. It is powered by an 890cc three-cylinder engine and uses a lightweight Deltabox chassis.
The motorcycle also gets fully adjustable suspension. Its electronics include IMU-based rider aids, multiple riding modes, cruise control and a quickshifter.
A TFT display with smartphone connectivity adds modern functionality. The XSR900 therefore combines classic styling with current motorcycle technology.
