BYD Yangwang U9 Xtreme Sets New Speed Record

The electric supercar reached 503.17 kmph on an Abu Dhabi highway, becoming the first production car to officially cross the 500 kmph mark.

BYD’s Yangwang U9 Xtreme has set a new world speed record for production cars. The electric supercar reached 503.17 kmph during a high-speed run in Abu Dhabi.

The record attempt took place on a secured section of the E11 highway in the Al Dhafra Region. Professional racing driver Marc Basseng was behind the wheel. The achievement was recognised by the FIA and Guinness World Records.

The record-breaking run took place on Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan Road. The car reached a top speed of 503.17 kmph on the specially secured highway section.

This improves on its previous benchmark of 496.22 kmph, set in September 2025. That earlier run took place at the ATP Papenburg testing facility in Germany.

Unlike the previous test, the latest attempt happened in a real-world road environment. The car had to deal with high temperatures, crosswinds and desert dust. At 503.17 kmph, it covered nearly 140 metres every second.

BYD Yangwang U9 Xtreme: Powertrain and Performance

The Yangwang U9 Xtreme uses a 1,200V high-voltage platform. It is powered by four electric motors, each capable of reaching 30,000 rpm. The combined power output stands at 2,220 kW, or 2,977 hp. The FIA has also cited an output figure of more than 3,000 hp.

BYD has specially optimised the tyres, brakes, cooling system and body control systems. These changes help maintain stability and safety at extremely high speeds.

BYD Yangwang U9 Xtreme: Track Record

The electric supercar has already achieved several performance milestones. In August 2025, it completed the Nürburgring Nordschleife in 6 minutes and 59.157 seconds. It became the first mass-produced electric supercar to complete the circuit in under seven minutes.

The car also features extensive aerodynamic upgrades. These include a carbon front splitter, rear diffuser, dual-channel hood and a tall swan-neck rear spoiler. Its torque vectoring system adjusts up to 100 times per second. The car also delivers a power-to-weight ratio of 1,200 hp per ton.

BYD Yangwang U9 Xtreme: Production

BYD will produce the Yangwang U9 Xtreme in limited numbers. The company has confirmed that global production will not exceed 30 units. The new 503.17 kmph record marks a major performance milestone for production electric cars. The limited-production model has now officially crossed the 500 kmph speed barrier.
