An early top-speed video shows the new Yamaha R2 reaching an indicated 159 kmph during a test ride.
Deliveries of the newly launched Yamaha R2 have started across India. Early owners are now sharing ride impressions, acceleration runs and top-speed tests online.
One video uploaded by YouTube channel Solo Traveler shows the motorcycle reaching an indicated 159 kmph. The result has drawn attention because of the motorcycle’s engine size and performance figures.
The speed shown in such a test may not represent independently verified real-world top speed. High-speed testing on public roads is also unsafe and against applicable speed limits.
Yamaha R2 Engine And Performance
The Yamaha R2 uses a new 204cc, liquid-cooled, single-cylinder engine. It produces 26.5 Hp of peak power and 19.1 Nm of maximum torque. The engine uses a DLC-coated finger-follower valve train. Yamaha has derived this technology from its larger motorcycles. Power is sent through a six-speed gearbox. The motorcycle also gets a bi-directional quickshifter for faster upshifts and downshifts.
New Platform And Chassis
The Yamaha R2 is built on an all-new platform. Yamaha says the platform takes design inspiration from the larger YZF-R6. The motorcycle uses a new high-tensile steel diamond frame. It has a kerb weight of 149 kg, making it one of the lighter motorcycles in its segment.
Suspension duties are handled by 37 mm upside-down front forks and a rear monoshock. Yamaha has tuned the setup for a mix of sporty handling and everyday comfort. The range-topping YZF-R2M gets adjustable suspension. It also offers adjustable brake and clutch levers for a more customised riding setup.
Features And Technology
The Yamaha R2 gets traction control, an assist and slipper clutch and dual-channel ABS. Yamaha Ride Control also provides three riding modes. These modes are Street, Sport and Rain. A new 5-inch TFT display provides key riding information.

The display also supports smartphone connectivity and navigation functions. The top-spec R2M additionally gets Yamaha’s Smart Key system.
Yamaha R2 Variants And Colours
The Yamaha R2 is offered in three variants with five colour choices. The entry-level version comes in Metallic Black and Dark Bluish Gray. Both colours feature black alloy wheels and a more understated design. The mid-spec version adds the quickshifter and gets Matte White Pearl and Racing Blue finishes.
The mid-spec model also receives body-coloured alloy wheels and additional graphics. At the top is the YZF-R2M, which is available only in Metallic Gray.
The R2M also gets a faux-suede seat and premium detailing. It features a silver-finished swingarm and styling touches inspired by Yamaha’s larger superbikes.
Yamaha R2 Top Speed Test: What The Video Shows
The Solo Traveler video shows an indicated speed of 159 kmph. However, the figure comes from a video test and should not be treated as an independently verified top-speed measurement.
Such speeds are also well beyond legal limits on Indian public roads. High-speed tests should only be carried out in controlled environments with suitable safety measures.
With deliveries now underway, more real-world ride impressions and performance tests are expected to emerge from owners. Yamaha R2 buyers can also choose between the different variants and equipment levels available in India.
