The updated 40-series models get new styling, a larger screen, Google Gemini and safety upgrades.
Volvo has revealed updated versions of its XC40, EX40 and EC40 models. The refreshed cars receive design changes, new cabin technology and upgraded safety features in international markets.
The three models retain their familiar shapes but get several updates. These include redesigned front-end elements, an 11.2-inch infotainment screen and Google Gemini integration.
Volvo 40-Series Gets Exterior Changes
The updated models receive their biggest visual changes at the front. The matrix LED headlamps have been reshaped while retaining Volvo’s signature Thor’s Hammer daytime-running-light design.
The bonnet, front bumper and front wings have also been revised. These changes give the cars a cleaner appearance without changing their overall body shapes. The XC40 gets a revised grille design. The electric EX40 and EC40 continue with blanked-off front panels.
All three models also receive new alloy-wheel designs. International versions of the XC40 can be fitted with 18-inch to 20-inch wheels. Volvo is also offering Black Edition versions in international markets. These models feature black exterior details for a darker appearance.
At the rear, the XC40 and EX40 receive revised LED tail-lamps. They also get updated tailgates and bumper designs. The EC40 keeps its familiar rear design. Its sloping roofline and coupe-SUV profile remain largely unchanged.
Larger Infotainment Screen With Google Gemini
The biggest cabin change is the new 11.2-inch infotainment touchscreen. It replaces the earlier 9-inch display. The larger screen runs Volvo’s latest Google-based operating system. Volvo says the system is designed to provide quicker access to commonly used functions.
Google Gemini is also integrated into the in-car assistant. It is designed to support more natural voice prompts for tasks such as route planning and finding nearby stops.
The assistant can also help manage messages. However, connected services and some functions will depend on market conditions, subscriptions and network connectivity.
Volvo has also added new upholstery and trim choices. International versions can be specified with finishes such as Arianne Cardamom leather, Brown Ash and Black Ash. The cabin also gets updated ambient lighting. A revised wireless smartphone-charging pad is part of the refresh.
Safety Technology Gets an Update
Volvo says the updated XC40, EX40 and EC40 come with a sensor-based safety platform as standard. The system is designed to respond to possible collisions in real time.

Automatic emergency braking is among the key safety functions. Emergency steering assistance is also available. Depending on the variant and market, buyers can get Level 2 driver-assistance features. A 360-degree camera system is also available on selected versions.
These systems are driver-assistance technologies, not self-driving features. Drivers must continue to supervise the vehicle and remain in control.
The updated 40-series models will also support over-the-air software updates. This can allow Volvo to add software improvements and selected functions after purchase where supported.
Petrol and Electric Powertrain Options
The XC40 continues to be offered internationally with a 2.0-litre turbo-petrol engine. It is available in two front-wheel-drive outputs. The lower version produces 163 hp and 265 Nm of torque. The more powerful version produces 197 hp and 300 Nm.
Both petrol versions use a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. The electric EX40 and EC40 offer different battery and motor combinations. Battery choices range from a 66kWh usable pack to a 79kWh usable long-range pack.
Depending on the version, buyers can choose rear-wheel drive or dual-motor all-wheel drive. The most powerful dual-motor version develops up to 442 hp and 670 Nm.
The rear-wheel-drive Long Range version offers up to 575 km of WLTP range in the EX40. The EC40 can deliver up to 584 km under the same testing standard.
The Long Range version uses an 82kWh nominal battery, with 79kWh usable capacity. It supports DC fast charging at up to 205kW. Volvo quotes a 10–80% charging time of about 28 minutes under suitable conditions.
What the Updates Mean for Indian Buyers
The refreshed 40-series models combine styling changes with updated technology and safety systems. The electric versions also offer multiple battery and drive configurations in international markets.
