Mahindra offers more engine and 4WD choices in the Thar OG, while the Thar Roxx limits 4WD to diesel variants.
Mahindra currently offers two Thar models in India, the three-door Thar OG and five-door Thar Roxx. Both share the Thar design language but differ in engines, power outputs and drivetrain choices.
Mahindra Thar OG gets three engine options
The 2026 Thar OG is available with three engine options. These include a 1.5-litre turbo-diesel, a 2.2-litre turbo-diesel and a 2.0-litre turbo-petrol engine.
The 1.5-litre mHawk diesel produces around 119 hp and 300 Nm of torque. It comes with a 6-speed manual gearbox and rear-wheel drive on the base AXT trim.
The larger 2.2-litre mHawk diesel produces about 150 hp and 330 Nm. The engine has gained 16 hp and 30 Nm compared with the earlier version.
The 2.0-litre mStallion TGDI petrol engine produces around 159 hp and 330 Nm. Both the 2.2-litre diesel and 2.0-litre petrol engines are available with manual and automatic gearbox options.
Thar OG offers petrol 4WD
The 2.2-litre diesel and 2.0-litre petrol engines are offered on LXT and ZXT trims. Buyers can choose between a 6-speed manual and a 6-speed torque-converter automatic gearbox.
These engines can also be specified with either rear-wheel drive or part-time 4WD. The 4WD system includes high and low reduction gears for off-road use.

Across its 4WD variants, the Thar OG uses a manual-shift part-time four-wheel-drive system. It also gets electric power steering and semi-floating axles.
Thar Roxx uses two engine options
The five-door Thar Roxx has a simpler engine lineup. It is available with a 2.0-litre turbo-petrol and a 2.2-litre turbo-diesel engine. Both engines can be paired with a 6-speed manual or 6-speed automatic gearbox. However, the 4WD option is available only with the diesel engine.
All petrol variants of the Thar Roxx are offered with rear-wheel drive. Lower diesel variants also use RWD, while selected higher diesel trims get 4WD.
Thar Roxx offers higher peak power
In its higher-output versions, the 2.0-litre turbo-petrol engine can produce around 174 hp and 380 Nm. The 2.2-litre diesel engine can deliver approximately 172 hp and 370 Nm in top specifications.
These figures are higher than the peak outputs listed for the Thar OG. However, several mainstream Roxx variants use more moderate power levels depending on the trim and market specification. The MX1, MX3, MX5, AX5L, AX7L and STAR EDN variants are among the trims listed with different power levels.
Thar OG vs Thar Roxx: 4WD difference
The biggest powertrain difference is the availability of petrol 4WD. The Thar OG can be bought with a petrol engine and 4WD in higher trims. The Thar Roxx does not offer this combination. Its 4WD system is limited to selected diesel variants in the MX5, AX5L and AX7L trims.
This gives buyers a clear choice based on their requirements. The Thar OG offers three engines and petrol 4WD, while the Roxx combines five-door practicality with diesel 4WD.
Thar OG and Thar Roxx prices
The Thar OG is priced from Rs 10.32 lakh and goes up to Rs 18.99 lakh, according to the information provided. The Thar Roxx starts at Rs 12.52 lakh and extends up to Rs 23.52 lakh. The final choice can therefore depend on the buyer’s preferred body style, engine, drivetrain and equipment level.
The three-door Thar OG remains focused on its traditional off-road format. The five-door Thar Roxx adds more space and comfort while retaining an adventure-focused powertrain option.
