The new Renault Duster Strong Hybrid combines a 1.8-litre petrol engine with two electric motors, but its real-world fuel efficiency falls short of the claimed 29 km/l.
Renault has introduced a Strong Hybrid powertrain in the Duster, adding a new option for SUV buyers in India. The system combines a 1.8-litre petrol engine with two electric motors and delivers a claimed fuel efficiency of up to 29 km/l. A first-drive test covering city and highway roads offers an early look at its performance, mileage and everyday usability.
Design and Features: Familiar SUV Character, Practical Cabin
The Renault Duster retains its upright and muscular SUV design. It features full LED headlamps, LED fog lamps and an illuminated Duster logo on the front grille. The 18-inch alloy wheels and rear LED light bar add to its exterior styling.
The cabin focuses on comfort and practicality. It gets a 10.1-inch touchscreen infotainment system and a 10.25-inch digital instrument display. Other features include a panoramic sunroof, dual-zone climate control, wireless smartphone connectivity and a powered tailgate.
The top-spec Emotion variant also offers ventilated front seats and six-way power adjustment. However, the SUV misses out on a 360-degree camera, an auto-dimming IRVM and ADAS, even in its top variant.
Boot space stands at 372 litres up to the parcel shelf. It increases to around 544 litres when measured up to the roof, making it practical for family trips.
Performance and Driving Experience: Smooth Response, Mixed Efficiency
The Duster Strong Hybrid uses a 1.8-litre, four-cylinder petrol engine. It produces 110 PS and 175 Nm of torque. Two electric motors support the engine, taking the combined system output to 160 PS.
The hybrid system offers a smooth driving experience, particularly at lower speeds. In EV mode, the SUV moves quickly thanks to instant electric motor response. The system automatically switches between electric and petrol power based on driving conditions.
During the first drive, the SUV covered approximately 130 kilometres. Around 80 per cent of the journey involved city roads, while the remaining 20 per cent covered highway routes.

The displayed mileage started at 18 km/l and increased to around 21 km/l midway through the journey. However, it settled at 17 km/l by the end of the drive.
This result falls short of Renault’s claimed 29 km/l efficiency. However, these figures come from a single drive and do not represent long-term fuel economy. Traffic conditions, driving habits and road surfaces can affect the final mileage.
Beyond fuel efficiency, the Duster continues to offer comfortable ride quality and confident handling. Its suspension handles potholes and uneven roads well. The steering also provides useful feedback, while the braking response feels predictable.
Price and Competition: How Does It Compare?
The Renault Duster Strong Hybrid starts at Rs 16.99 lakh for the Evolution variant. The top-spec Emotion variant costs Rs 19.49 lakh, with both prices being ex-showroom.
Its key rivals include the Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder and Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara. The Duster offers practical boot space and retains its strong driving characteristics. Its pricing could also make it competitive against these hybrid SUVs, depending on the variants compared.
Verdict: A Practical Hybrid SUV With Some Limitations
The Renault Duster Strong Hybrid brings together a new powertrain, practical cabin space and familiar driving characteristics. Its comfortable ride and handling remain important strengths.
However, the first-drive mileage of 17 km/l falls well below the claimed 29 km/l figure. The absence of features such as a 360-degree camera and ADAS also affects its overall equipment package.
For Indian SUV buyers, the Duster offers another hybrid option in a competitive segment. Buyers will need to consider its real-world fuel efficiency, features and variant-wise pricing before making a purchase decision.
