Yashasvi Jaiswal has responded to commentator Harsha Bhogle after Bhogle criticised their confrontation during the second Test. The incident took place on day one at the SSC ground.
Jaiswal and Fernando were involved in a tense exchange after the Sri Lankan fast bowler dismissed Jaiswal for 45. Fernando gave Jaiswal a send-off as the Indian batter walked back.
Jaiswal then turned around and confronted Fernando. During the exchange, Jaiswal’s helmet made contact with Fernando’s forehead. Sri Lanka captain Dhananjaya de Silva later stepped in and separated the two players.
Bhogle discussed the incident in a video for Cricbuzz. He said Jaiswal had been provoked but felt the Indian opener should have walked away.
Bhogle also warned that Jaiswal’s combative side could distract from his batting ability. He said the batter should avoid allowing such moments to get him into trouble.
Jaiswal disagreed with Bhogle’s assessment. He responded to a Cricbuzz social media post and said people should not judge the incident without knowing what Fernando had said.
Jaiswal also said that players must respond when someone crosses the line. He added that India would fight and reply.
India batting coach Sitanshu Kotak offered a more cautious view of the incident. He said one of the bowlers may have made a comment that led to the heated exchange.
Kotak said Jaiswal should not have gone so close to Fernando, even if he had been provoked. However, he described the incident as something that happened in the heat of the moment.
The clash has therefore drawn different views from within and around the Indian team. Jaiswal has defended his response, while Bhogle and Kotak have stressed the need for restraint.
The focus now remains on the second Test and Jaiswal’s performance after the incident.
