The limited-edition cafe racer pays tribute to Ducati’s racing history, with only 873 units planned worldwide and India’s allocation already sold out.

Ducati has launched the Formula 73 limited-edition motorcycle in India at Rs 20 lakh (ex-showroom). Inspired by the iconic 750 Super Sport Desmo from 1973, the cafe racer celebrates the Italian brand’s racing heritage. The entire Indian allocation has already been claimed, with just 873 units planned for production worldwide.

Ducati Formula 73 Celebrates Racing Heritage

The Formula 73 draws inspiration from the Ducati 750 Super Sport Desmo, the brand’s first road-going motorcycle to feature desmodromic valve timing. This technology uses a mechanical system to control both the opening and closing of engine valves.

The original motorcycle was linked to the 750 Imola Desmo, which Paul Smart and Bruno Spaggiari rode to victory at the 1972 200 Miglia di Imola race. The event was the first European race for production-derived motorcycles.

The modern Formula 73 carries a silver and aqua-green paint scheme inspired by the original racing motorcycle. A vertical gold stripe runs along the fuel tank, recalling an unpainted section of the Imola Desmo that helped pit crews check fuel levels.

Its cafe racer design includes clip-on handlebars, bar-end mirrors, a short front fairing and a tapered rear section. Billet aluminium levers and footpegs, along with a Rizoma fuel cap, add to its detailing.

Engine and Performance

The Ducati Formula 73 uses an 803cc Desmodue L-twin engine that produces 73hp at 8,250rpm and 65.2Nm of torque at 7,000rpm. The engine comes paired with a Termignoni exhaust system developed specifically for this model.

The motorcycle uses a steel trellis frame for its chassis. Suspension duties are handled by a 41mm KYB upside-down front fork and a KYB rear monoshock with preload adjustment. The Formula 73 weighs 183kg without fuel. It rides on 17-inch spoked wheels fitted with Pirelli Diablo Rosso IV tyres.

Features and Electronics

The limited-edition motorcycle comes with several electronic rider aids. These include cornering ABS, traction control, a quickshifter and two riding modes.

A 4.3-inch TFT display provides the main riding information, while full-LED lighting is standard. Buyers can also choose heated grips and turn-by-turn navigation as optional accessories.

Limited Production and Special Collectibles

Each Ducati Formula 73 receives an individual serial number on its steering plate. Buyers also get a certificate of authenticity confirming the motorcycle’s identity as part of the limited production run.

Ducati will also provide a special box containing period photographs and sketches from its Style Centre. These items highlight the design history behind the motorcycle.

Ducati Formula 73 Price in India

The Ducati Formula 73 is priced at Rs 20 lakh (ex-showroom) in India. However, the entire Indian allocation has already been claimed, limiting its availability through the initial allocation.

With only 873 units planned worldwide, the Formula 73 combines a heritage-inspired design with modern electronics and an 803cc engine. The limited-edition motorcycle’s availability in India will depend on whether any further units are allocated to the market.
